Participate in National Tie One On Day: Sew an Apron!

Apron Memories: Tie One On - An Apron Of Course !
What is National Tie One On Day? It’s a grassroots effort to help those in your community who are a little less fortunate this Thanksgiving season.

Here’s how to participate: On the day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday the 23rd this year, make or buy some sort of baked good: a loaf of tasty bread, muffins, a pie, etc. Wrap it up in an apron and tuck in a nice note. Tie on your own apron (hence “Tie One On”), then walk out your front door and personally give it to someone in your community—next door, up the street, downstairs—and if you’re feeling particularly giving you could do this multiple times to multiple people!

The whole point of Tie On Day is to put the “give” back into Thanksgiving. It’s a wonderful way to bring your local community closer together by sharing your good fortune in the form of food and an apron. Who wouldn’t love some baked goods and a new apron?

If you don’t have a spare apron handy to give away, you can always make one. It’s very easy to sew an apron, and giving a hand-made gift is much more personal and rewarding than giving someone something you bought from a store.

I’ve found many free tutorials on how to sew your own aprons. Here are some of my favorites:

Dish Towel ApronDish Towel Apron

From Martha Stewart.
This is an extremely easy and satisfying apron made from two dish towels. There are even a couple of pockets in the front. An added bonus is that dish towels are usually already hemmed, so it saves you a ton of work!

Speedy T-Shirt into ApronSpeedy T-Shirt into Apron

From Instructables.
Most everybody has old T-shirts lying around, and this is a great way to re-purpose one into a bib-less apron. You can sew a pocket onto it using scraps of fabric!

Men's ApronMen’s Apron

From Needle Book.
In case your recipient isn’t quite into pretty or frilly aprons, here’s a great tutorial on how to make an apron that is more man-appropriate.

If none of these apron designs are to your liking, Tipnut.com has compiled a list of 50 Free Apron Tutorials, so there’s bound to be something there for you!

You can find out more about National Tie One On Day at the official website: National Tie One On Day at Apron Memories. It’s a great opportunity to put your sewing machine to use for a good cause.

Happy Sewing,
Chris

Sewing for a Cause Follow-up

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Last month we posted a blog about numerous sewing and quilting groups that meet around the Puget Sound region to sew for a charitable organization or cause. We had a fantastic response from numerous readers that participate in groups! Read about these additional groups, plus we included the information posted previously to get the word out about these rewarding opportunities.

Binkies are made for children in need of comfort.Binky Patrol
Binkies are sewn, knitted or crocheted blankets, made from the heart and given to children in need of comfort. These children have survived such tragedies as cancer, fire, flood and domestic violence to name a few. The local chapter would like to invite you to join. Binky Patrol meets the first Sunday of each month in Marysville. Call 360-659-7198 for more information.

Dress A Girl Around the World
Sewers from several states including Washington State are working with Hope4Kids International to serve girls so poor they can only dream of ever owning a new dress. The group transforms used pillowcases, sheets and donated fabric remnants into dresses any little girl can be proud of. The pattern is simple but produces versatile dresses quickly. And by adding a pocket, a little lace or a vintage handkerchief these dresses become even more unique. Some ladies hide a handmade doll or teddy bear in the pocket for a sweet surprise making it even more special! In the last year, Dress A Girl Around the World has delivered over 12,000 dresses to 34 countries. This year they have an ambitious goalto distribute 50,000 dresses to girls in need. There are several local groups sewing for this program and new sewers are becoming involved. If you would like more information visit the blog about the Washington State groups.

Maple Leaf Lutheran Church Quilters Circle
This group in Northeast Seattle makes quilts for Lutheran World Relief. These quilts are shipped all over the world to assist with disaster relief. The group needs gently used full (or larger) sheets for quilt backing. Cotton fabric suitable for quilts is also welcome. Donations may be delivered to the Church at 10005 32nd NE, Seattle, or contact bbcook@msn.com for pickup.

Little Dress for Africa
“Little Dresses for Africa is a non-profit 501c3, Christian based organization which provides relief to the children of  Africa. Simple dresses are made out of pillow cases and distributed through the orphanages, churches and schools in Africa to plant in the hearts of little girls that they are worthy!” The Everett Quality Sewing location is in the process of organizing a Little Dress for Africa sewing group,  For further information, please contact Rose Mary at the Everett Quality Sewing location (425)290-8000 or (800)488-0458. Read here for more information about this organization.

The Piecemakers Quilting GroupThe Piecemakers Quilting Group
Giving back to the community while incorporating their love for quilting, the Piecemakers Quilting Group meets twice a month to assemble quilts that are distributed through Lutheran World Relief. The quilt tops are sewn by various members of the group, then the quilts are assembled at group meetings. On average, the Piecemakers complete 10 Quilts at each meeting! Quality Sewing donated a Brother NS40 sewing machine to help this group with their generous efforts. This group meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at Advent Lutheran Church in Mill Creek. Visit the Piecemakers blog for more information!

Bags for YWCA
The YWCA’s Women’s Support Shelter is a domestic violence shelter for women and their families. For many, the Shelter and its related services form a sturdy base from which to start fresh, stable, safe, self-sufficient lives. The mission of the Wednesday Bag Ladies at the Tacoma Quality Sewing location is to provide tote bags for their fresh start. Simple totes, for adults & children, can be great canvasses for embroidery, quilt squares, raw edge applique, decorative stitches, etc. The Wednesday Bag Ladies meet on the third Wednesday of each month at the Tacoma store, read more about the Wednesday Bag Ladies.

Our Federal Way Quality Sewing location has a group that meets the 1st and 3rd Friday morning of each month to sew and put together quilts for military personnel and veterans. KBTC Pledge Drive a Huge Success

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

First of all, to all of you who donated to KBTC on Saturday during the pledge drive – THANK YOU!!! We surpassed our goal and raised over $20,000. It was a great day and one of the most successful on air pledge drives ever! All of us from Quality Sewing & Vacuum Centers had a great time answering phones and taking pledges. Thank you for your generous donations.

If you don’t know about the sewing shows on KBTC, you should check them out. Every Saturday morning from 8am- 12:30pm, KBTC airs nine different sewing and quilting programs. We are so lucky to live in the Puget Sound where we get this great programming. In many cities across the country they only get a few shows at some obscure time of the day. Quality Sewing & Vacuum Centers has always felt that this programming is a benefit for the sewing, quilting and crafting community and we have underwritten these shows for many years.

Last Saturday many of the Quality Sewing management team, including myself, volunteered at the KBTC pledge drive. We pitched in and answered phones, taking pledges and giving interviews. How many of you saw me? I was so nervous, I felt like a deer in headlights but it was fun anyway.

Plus, in conjunction with Brother our new joint sponsor, we are gave away two Brother Innovis 900D Sewing & Embroidery Machines. Paul did a great job showing off these awesome machines at each break. He is pictured above with Jane Moxey from KBTC. Everyone who pledged was entered into the drawing.

One machine went the drawing winner, Jannice Gubser. The other machine went to Susan Harmon (photo left) for the highest pledge on Saturday morning. We also gave away Sew Fun Memberships and Quality Sewing 25th Year Anniversary Sweatshirts for people who met certain pledge levels. It was a fun day and it is great to know that we are helping keep sewing and quilting programs on air in the Puget Sound.
